WHEN GAMES BECOME SERIOUS

Kids love to play games, when it comes to the internet, there is no exception. But as with many of the good things in life, it should be done in moderation. This however can be difficult when you, as a child, have lots of games that are designed just to attract and provide dopamine kicks, available around the clock. Computer game addiction is today a real issue and the World Health Organization added 2018 the diagnosis of “gaming disorder” in their international disease list. Online games also make it possible for children to play games that are not suitable for children. Today’s +18 games are played many times by children significantly younger than that, where extreme violence, sex and drugs are normalized. As a parent, you should therefore pay attention and set healthy rules for online games and gaming.

WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY?

To not keep track of the online games is the same as not knowing where your children are in the physical world several hours a day, which is completely unthinkable for most parents.

There is a world out there too. And as a parent, you also want your children to ‘level up’ in reality. To mature, acquire good values, learn to interact with other people and understand body language is stuff that you have to learn in the real world.

TIPS & ADVICE

Agree on the amount of time that can be spent playing games per week as well as at what hours.
Reduce gaming time if it can be linked to decreased physical activity, sleep or social activity.
Tell your children not to give out personal details when playing online games and report inappropriate behaviour.
Make sure to have a webfilter installed on your kids devices to block violent and harmful online games as well as suspicious sites.
